I spent most of my life in Germany, where white walls are not just common, they are the standard. The default was always the same: Alpinaweiss or ‘Alpina white’. Clean, consistent, unquestioned! Before moving to Canada, I don’t think I had ever encountered a home that chose anything else.
I was over the moon when I arrived here and discovered an unexpected spectrum, countless variations of white, each with its own temperature, depth, and mood.
At first glance, this piece appears monochromatic, but on closer inspection, subtle differences emerge. Warm vanilla tones sit beside cooler whites, soft creams shift into pale greys. The surface is composed of individually cut and folded paper elements, each angled to catch light in a slightly different way. As you move past it, shadows deepen and recede, revealing a quiet complexity within what initially seems uniform.
For me, white will never be boring.
