This piece is inspired by the Okanagan, which I now call home and where I have lived for the past half decade. While the valley is known for its lush orchards, vineyards, and expansive lakes, it is also home to Canada’s only true desert.
The palette draws from this arid, sun-washed terrain: soft sands, warm sienna, dusty clay, pale limestone, and muted umber tones layered like sediment over time. Occasional hints of cool grey and a fleeting touch of blue evoke the presence of distant water.
A quiet landscape emerges from fragments once meant to be discarded. Composed of hand-cut and carefully folded paint swatches, each element is shaped into a subtle, angled form that catches and releases light in shifting ways. As you move past it, the surface seems to ripple. Never static, always in conversation with its surroundings.
There is a quiet rhythm in the arrangement, reminiscent of wind tracing patterns across desert ground or strata revealed in a weathered canyon wall. Each folded element holds both shadow and light, creating depth from simplicity and inviting a closer, slower look.
