La Perouse Bay on a Cloudy Day

$1,750.00

This piece is inspired by a photograph I took along La Perouse Bay on Maui, where land and sea meet in a striking, elemental contrast. Visiting Hawaii had been a lifelong dream of mine, and when it finally came true a few years ago, I felt a deep urge to capture what I experienced on the island.

In German, we say “die Muse hat mich geküsst,” which translates to “the muse has kissed me.” It describes a moment of sudden, undeniable inspiration. That is exactly what I felt on Maui. It became a pivotal moment that drew me back to making art.

The palette of this piece reflects the layered coastal terrain: deep charcoal and black tones evoke hardened lava, while chalky whites and warm off-whites mirror sun-bleached coral and scattered stone. Subtle beiges and sandy hues ground the composition, while muted blues and cool greys rise gently through the center, suggesting the ocean and the shifting horizon beneath a dense blanket of clouds.

Constructed entirely from reclaimed paint chips, the piece transforms fragments into a textured landscape. I cut and fold each of the hundreds of pieces by hand, then carefully arrange them into a rhythmic surface. The angled forms catch light differently throughout the day, echoing the movement of water against rock and the ever-changing atmosphere of the coast.
